There Is No Single Nashville Jail Release Time
Someone can have a bond set and still remain in custody while the release process is completed. In Davidson County, the time from arrest to walking out of jail varies based on booking, bond, Pretrial Services, holds, warrants, monitoring requirements, and the circumstances of the charge.
The Downtown Detention Center is the first stop for Davidson County arrestees. Booking and release are separate processes, so family members should not assume that a bond amount means the person will be outside within a particular number of minutes.
What Has to Happen Before Release?
Depending on the case, the person may need to be transported and booked, identified, fingerprinted and photographed, medically screened, entered into the jail system, and brought through the initial bond process. A financial bond may need to be posted or arranged, or the defendant may be screened for a non-financial release option.
Davidson County Pretrial Services operates around the clock, and its screening office is located in the DDC booking room. That program identifies qualified defendants for potential release on non-financial conditions.
Who Sets Bond in Nashville?
Davidson County's Night Court magistrates are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They conduct probable-cause proceedings, issue warrants, and set bail bonds in criminal cases. Despite the name 'Night Court,' the magistrate function is not limited to nighttime hours.
The timing of the initial bond process can therefore differ from a county where a defendant must wait for a conventional daytime court docket.
What Can Slow Down Release?
Common issues that can affect timing include:
- Booking still being completed
- A bond that has not yet been posted or arranged
- Pretrial Services screening or release processing
- A probation-violation warrant or other warrant
- An out-of-county or other legal hold
- Multiple pending charges
- GPS, alcohol monitoring, or another condition that must be arranged
- Domestic-violence release requirements or no-contact conditions
Because these issues are case-specific, another person's release time is not a reliable prediction.
What If the Person Was Arrested on Broadway?
Broadway and downtown arrests often create an additional practical problem: the defendant may be visiting Nashville and planning to fly or drive home shortly after release.
Before leaving Tennessee, the defendant should confirm the exact charge, court date, bond conditions, and whether personal attendance at the next court setting will be required. Returning home does not eliminate a Davidson County criminal case.
How Can I Get Current Custody Information?
The Davidson County Sheriff's Office operates an offender information center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its published inmate-information number is 615-862-8123. The Sheriff's Office also provides an Active Inmate Search.
If an arrest occurred very recently, the person may not appear immediately while booking is still underway.
Can a Lawyer Get Someone Released Immediately?
No lawyer can promise an immediate release simply because counsel has been hired. A lawyer can, however, investigate the bond status, identify what is holding up release, review whether a bond modification or hearing may be appropriate, and help the defendant understand conditions that will apply after release.
In some cases the most important legal work begins after release, including preserving video, reviewing police conduct, preparing for General Sessions Court, and avoiding a bond violation.
